The news that the President and Mrs. Trump have now contracted coronavirus is a powerful reminder to us all of the insidious reach of this disease and how important it is to wear a mask whenever around anyone else, to maintain appropriate distance, and to observe all recommended precautions. This disease cannot be wished away or imagined away. It targets people of every status, and penetrates every imaginary invulnerability.
We pray for the recovery of the President and his family and for all the sick and those who care for them and all whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by this terrible tragedy. We pray also for the 1 million dead worldwide and the 200,000+ Americans who have died.
There are lessons to be learned from this calamity. Let us learn them, and let us work together to make this society safer and healthier for all, more just in its inspiration and equal in its practice.
